Tio Pepe - Madrid, Spain

The rider is none other than King Carlos III, affectionately dubbed “el mejor alcalde de Madrid”—“the best mayor Madrid never had.” He reigned from 1759 to 1788 and was a major urban reformer. Under his watch, Madrid got a glow-up: the Puerta de Alcalá, the Cibeles and Neptune fountains, and even the Prado Museum were all part of his legacy. 

The statue itself was installed in 1994 after a public vote decided it should stand right there in Puerta del Sol. It’s a bronze reproduction by sculptors Miguel Ángel Rodríguez and Eduardo Zancada, based on an 18th-century model by Juan Pascual de Mena. The whole thing weighs a hefty 2.8 tons and stands 9 meters tall, making it a true heavyweight in both size and symbolism.
